Hi everyone! I hope everyone had an amazing Labor Day weekend! Welcome back to “Entrepreneur in the Spotlight”, where I sit down with amazing solopreneurs and have them share their journeys and insights. Today’s featured guest is Nakia Whittaker-Woody, the owner of KISS Virtual Services, VA World Empowerment Circle.
Hi Nakia! I’d love to know more about KISS Virtual Services, VA World Empowerment Circle. What’s the story behind it?
I have a passion for efficiency, community, and service. When I began my entrepreneurship journey, I quickly realized the lack of support and resources available. I felt overwhelmed by misinformation and scams and didn’t see myself represented in the industry. Without any formal business training, I initially followed the corporate path—getting certified to work with the State and Government, attending in-person networking events in my Tri-State area, and more.
To create a supportive environment, I co-founded a Facebook group for fellow entrepreneurs. Later, the idea of hosting an in-person slumber party evolved into something bigger: incorporating education into our gatherings. This led to the creation of the VA World Conference. My mission is to recreate the sense of extended community I grew up with by fostering shared knowledge, networking, and support. I want to provide a sense of “community” for those on the entrepreneurship journey and ensure they see themselves represented by highlighting others who are like them.

That’s very inspiring. What kind of services do you offer?
I provide virtual administrative services and also run a community and event platform dedicated to educating and supporting women, with a special focus on women of color, in the virtual and remote work industry.

What makes you unique from your competitors?
Authenticity, transparency, shared knowledge, collaboration, resources, and partnership opportunities are essential for helping individuals become well-rounded entrepreneurs—financially, legally, mentally, and physically. By adopting a freemium model, I make these resources accessible to startups that may not have the funds to invest at the beginning of their journey.
What impact has your business made on your community?
I’m involved in several community initiatives, like participating in the Chamber of Commerce’s Mission Tomorrow program to help high school freshmen learn about different careers. I also donate 200 backpacks with supplies each year to support back-to-school efforts.

What was the most difficult part of starting and running your business?
Dealing with isolation and Imposter Syndrome.
I can definitely relate to that. What has been the most rewarding outcome of your business?
Finding a tribe and being able to give back.
Absolutely! Having a supportive community is so important. Given your creativity, how do you turn your ideas into reality?
As an entrepreneur managing mental health challenges, I rely on project management tools and Google Drive to keep track of all my ideas. I then collaborate with my Impact & Empower team to brainstorm, refine, and set timelines for bringing those ideas to life.

That is so inspiring. What do you do when you’re burnt out or unmotivated?
I listen to music and sit with my cat. Then I go to my tribe for support.
What is one strategy that has helped you grow your business?
Being open and true to myself helps me stand out and feels really refreshing for most people.
What is one failure you had as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?
I recently planned and promoted my 2023 event, but I was spending too much money, lacked support from my team, and felt discouraged. So, I made the tough decision to let everyone go, cancel the event, and shift my focus. I then became more intentional and specific moving forward.
I have one last question for you. Do you have advice for any new solopreneurs out there?
Seek out your tribe, find what works for you, and just start.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us today Nakia. It’s been really inspiring to hear about your journey and wish you all the best with everything ahead!
Make sure you all follow Nakia on her website, Instagram, and Linkedin. Stay tuned for new blogs coming soon and remember – success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life, but what you inspire others to do. Take care!
