A Deep-Dive, Spoiler-Free Book Review of a Dark and Unpredictable Literary Novel
Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting into when I started Animal Control by J. Miller. What seemed like a slow-building tale about a teenage girl discovering a new power gradually morphed into something far more complex, intense, and emotionally haunting. This isn’t your typical supernatural coming-of-age novel. Instead, it’s a psychological exploration of influence, corruption, grief, and the devastating consequences of unchecked power.
First Impressions and Pacing
I’ll be honest—the book starts off slow. The pacing might challenge some readers initially. The characters, especially the teens, speak in highly polished, sometimes overly complex language. As someone who values authenticity in dialogue, I found this occasionally jarring. It was difficult to believe I was reading conversations between actual teenagers.
But I kept going, and I’m so glad I did. Because what unfolds after those initial chapters is chilling, compelling, and unpredictable.
Shay’s Descent and the Ethics of Power
Shay, the main character, inherits a strange and potent power that begins subtly and grows increasingly terrifying. Rather than rising into a heroic role, Shay descends deeper into morally gray territory. What starts as controlling animals becomes influencing people, and eventually, wielding that power on a scale that made my heart pound.
One of the most intense scenes for me was when she takes control over a stadium full of people. The sheer scale and emotional weight of that moment shocked me. Not long after, Shay manipulates an entire town. Watching her lose control, or worse—intentionally cross lines without thinking of the consequences—was unnerving.
Family, Friendship, and Isolation
This book doesn’t just explore power—it explores the cost of wielding it. One moment that really hit me was Shay’s confrontation with her parents. The emotional toll of how they truly felt about her and how she responded using her powers made me pause and reflect.
Though Shay eventually forms a small team with her friends Opal and Santana, I found myself wishing the supporting characters had more depth—especially physical and emotional descriptions. They never felt as vivid as Shay. I also struggled to clearly picture the Echoforms and Delphis, supernatural elements that play key roles in the story. The transitions that change their roles near the end of the book could have used more clarity.
Beautiful Chaos: The Ending
As the story draws to a close, it becomes clear that Shay and her team believe they are doing the right thing. But in their effort to reshape society, they begin to resemble the very systems they may have once opposed. Without spoiling anything, I can say the ending was both mysterious and beautiful—leaving me with a feeling of quiet unease and respect for how far the story was willing to go.
Final Thoughts: 4.5 Out of 5 Stars
Animal Control is not for everyone. It’s quiet, cerebral, dark, and slow-burning—but it’s also deeply original. If you enjoy speculative fiction with philosophical weight and psychological tension, this book will stay with you long after the last page.
I personally would have rated it 4.5 stars if I could. The only things that held me back from a perfect 5 were:
- Slow pacing in the beginning
- Dialogue that didn’t always sound age-appropriate
- Lack of descriptive clarity for important characters and supernatural elements
Still, this was one of the most unsettling and fascinating reads I’ve picked up in a long time.
Content Warnings:
- Animal cruelty (manipulation and self-harm)
- Violence
- Psychological abuse
- Power misuse
- Intense family conflict
Recommended For: Readers who enjoy morally complex protagonists, dark supernatural fiction, literary speculative stories, and psychological thrillers with a twist of the surreal.
